Some walking Thingyan events will be held in several major cities in the country during the forthcoming Thingyan Festival according to the authorities concerned.

According to Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein,  it is estimated that Yangon will have 95 Thingyan pandals(stages) as well as  the events planned to be at locations and streets around City Hall and along Kannar Road also known as Strand Road.

Like some other major cities, Yangon will hold more Thingyan events in the style of traditional practices with the aim of attracting more international attention for Myanmar’s unique New Year festivities.

“Promotion of the economy including the tourism industry is one of the objectives laid down for the Thingyan festival this year. We will try to be systematic in organizing and holding the festival in order to practically show that international views on Myanmar are different from what the current situation of our country is. We plan to make this festival busier and busier every year and to organize market festivals every month to win the attention of foreign travellers along with Myanmar’s 12 monthly festivities,” he said.

In Mandalay, the walking events will be on the streets in the south of the Mandalay moat of the royal palace. Last year, Mandalay’s walking Thingyan events won much appreciation from local and foreign travellers.
